The Sculpture Gallery

The Sculpture Gallery is one of the most eye-catching collections in downtown The Hague. At the intersection of Grote Marktstraat and Spui, a sculpture stands on an oval pedestal every 25 meters. The gallery was started in 1990 from an idea by P. Struycken commissioned by Stroom and has 40 pedestals with sculptures. Its permanent nature and the annual new art commissions to artists for the Sculpture Gallery make it a unique form of art in public space: it has been showing a cross-section of Dutch sculpture since the early 1990s. Meanwhile, there are 46 sculptures displayed in alternating compositions. It is a wonderful counterpoint to the busy downtown area, with an audience all its own.

The pedestals were designed by Geert Lap and the text signs accompanying the sculptures by Rudo Hartman. In 2011, on behalf of Stroom Den Haag, artist André Kruysen took over the curatorship of the gallery from P. Struycken.
