Navid Nuur, 'RE/FLECT/OR', 2018

Location: Intersection of Spui/Grote Markstraat (in front of Primark)
Unveiling: Wednesday, December 19, 2018, 6:00 PM

On Wednesday, December 19, 2018, the new sculpture RE/FLECT/OR by internationally renowned artist Navid Nuur was added to De Beeldengalerij in the center of The Hague. It is no coincidence that this sculpture was unveiled near the shortest day of the year: the sculpture comes to life through artificial light.

RE/FLECT/OR is a sculpture reminiscent of a building, with horizontal layers alternating with layers of colorful reflectors, creating a completely different effect during the day and night. At night, the effect is particularly intense: the reflectors light up from the glow of traffic and surrounding shop windows, and the color patterns change with movement.

Navid Nuur: "At the request of Stroom, I began thinking about a sculpture in 2013. What matters to me is that a public sculpture engages with passersby, each of whom has a different perspective. People are present day and night, so when creating a sculpture for an outdoor space, it's important to consider everyone's day and night movements. With something as technical as reflectors, you can constantly show a different aspect of the sculpture—it’s in dialogue with the city and its dynamics. It can be a chance encounter or one that you consciously capture with a flash photo."

RE/FLECT/OR (2008-2018) forms the foundation for Navid Nuur's future works. For him, his work presents itself more as thought models rather than definitive sculptures, installations, or drawings. He prefers to call his works 'interimodules': a module as a form of thought/concept, and interim as the temporary 'in-between.'
