Tirzo Martha, 'The dematerialization of the five commandments in the five senses', 2019
Location: Spui (in front of City Hall)
Unveiling: 29 August 2019, 18.00 hrs
A new sculpture by Tirzo Martha, entitled De dematerialisatie van de vijf geboden in de vijf zintuigen (The dematerialization of the five commandments in the five senses) is the latest addition to The Sculpture Gallery in the City Center of The Hague. This same year Tirzo Martha (Curaçao, 1965) was unanimously chosen as the winner of the 11th Wilhelminaring - the oeuvre prize for Dutch sculpture.
The sculpture is largely cast in bronze with a few components of concrete and rubber. In het werk spelen alledaagse objecten de hoofdrol. In his sculptural work, everyday objects play a prominent role. By taking these objects out of their usual context, the artist invites the viewer to rediscover their true meaning. Martha's use of objects such as a barbecue, Afro combs and a piss pot encourage us to come up with hidden associations.
