Art in the public space

In the almost 30 years of its existence, art center Stroom Den Haag has contributed to the development of the city of The Hague with innovative art projects in public space. Both physically and mentally because the art projects and works often make a statement about the space and context in which they are located.

The city of The Hague has a rich collection of works of art in public spaces with hundreds of (statue) statues, plaques, sculptures and reliefs. Information about those works can be found on the website, a project of the municipality in cooperation with Stroom Den Haag. All data per artwork, together with information about meaning and location, have been bundled online and are accessible to everyone. It is now possible to take an online tour of your own city or to use the information as inspiration for a summer outing.

Stroom, responsible for interpreting the municipal policy on art in public spaces, has been asked to manage the new website. There are currently 555 artworks online in all districts: Centrum, Scheveningen, Escamp, Haagse Hout, Loosduinen, Segbroek, Laak, Leidschenveen-Ypenburg, Wateringseveld. Photos and interesting background stories of the many outdoor artworks in The Hague are now available digitally.

Free open-air museum
The amount and diversity of art in The Hague's public spaces is overwhelming. The website offers text and images about monuments of historical figures such as William of Orange, Thorbecke, and Drees Sr., but of course also about the striking statue of The Hague Harry on the Grote Markt or the work The Frog with Umbrella by Karel Appel near the Town Hall. The site is the access to all information about art in public spaces in The Hague, conveniently arranged by artist, period and type of artwork. It is also possible to search by title or via the map. This way everyone can see whose sculpture is around the corner. With information in Dutch and English, it is a wonderful new 'tool' for the residents of The Hague, as well as for tourists and online audiences.

Whether it is Het Schillenpaard in the Schilderswijk district, James Turrell's Hemels Gewelf in Kijkduin, or Huang Yong Ping's Ling Zhi Helicopters in Leidschenveen-Ypenburg, we all have a work of art that is dear to us or that intrigues us. Through buitenkunstdenhaag.nl it is easy to find out who the artist is, and whether, for example, there are more sculptures by him/her to be found in the city.
