Studio visits Mladen Miljanovic: 18 and 19 March

On Thursday 18 and Friday 19 March 2021, Mladen Miljanovic will have one-on-one conversations with artists in The Hague about their art practice via Zoom.

As an extension of the monthly studio visit program, Stroom initiated the Digital Dialogues program during the first lockdown in 2020, in which artists from The Hague engage in an online conversation with an interesting artist, writer or curator. You can now sign up for a Digital Dialogue with Mladen Miljanovic: a visual artist, researcher and professor who lives and works in Banja Luka (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Miljanovic is also a guest in Stroom's Reading Residency program, which will be partially remote due to travel restrictions.

Mladen Miljanovic describes his areas of interest as follows:

"I base my art practice upon a conceptual and provocative approach which is questioning my own social, political, cultural surrounding and living conditions: on the one hand my work is influenced by the experience of growing up during the war and its aftermath in the destroyed, impoverished, ethnically and territorially divided, and externally isolated country. On the other hand, it is my formal education (Reserve Officer Military School, and later work at tombstones workshop). The consequences of the war, knowledge gained in the military school make the basic field of reference of my work as an artist. From the primary education of being painter now I combine new media and conceptual strategies into pluralistic, engaged and subversive contemporary art approach. In that approach art is not a goal, but more a tool. In the most recent work and research I'm interested in strategies and methods how to use fields of arts and culture as providers of knowledge in both a classical and subversive way, and to explore passive positions of both artists and cultural institutions. Part of that research are aspects of today militarised and neoliberal knowledge, monetisation and exclusion, and how through more or less radical models these fields of locked knowledge can be decontaminated and distributed."
