Studio visits Collectie DE.GROEN: 18 and 20 July

On Tuesday, July 18 and Thursday, July 20, Marjolein de Groen and Peter Jordaan of Collection DE.GROEN will make a series of studio visits to artists in The Hague. The “building for art” is located in a former bank building in Arnhem and includes an exhibition space for shows, lectures and presentations, a video room in the former vault, the private collection on the first and second floors and a café with terrace.

Collection DE.GROEN is an initiative of Marjolein de Groen and Peter Jordaan. They describe the areas of interest for Collection DE.GROEN as follows:

“We are visual artists, although in recent years we call ourselves “artists on hold”, because actively collecting and above all displaying the collection at the Weverstraat in Arnhem requires all our time and attention. In doing so, we have both left behind a professional practice of some 35 years.

The collection includes contemporary visual art from a variety of disciplines. Not only paintings, drawings and photographs but also videos, spatial works and installations. It is a relatively young collection. Our motto is “Almighty Modest.” By this we mean that even a modest - perhaps inconspicuous work - can still be impressive. The motivation to purchase a work is always hidden in the work itself. The moment you decide to buy something, the artist transfers responsibility to the collector. With that, “having” a work feels more like management than ownership. It is our task and ambition to look carefully around us through all generations, to have conversations with young and old artists. Lauded or utterly unknown does not matter, it is the work that matters. Studio conversations, looking at the work, unraveling and perhaps understanding what the artist means by the work. It's all part of it.

Buying art and shoving it away in a depot is not an option for us. Art must be seen and we like to engage in conversation with our visitors.Besides the fact that the collection is publicly accessible, we initiate 4 to 6 exhibitions each year that are independent of the collection. We also organize artists' talks (such as the series Loving & Critical 2021- 2023) and make our place available to art institutions that want to organize a debate. With the exhibitions, talks and debates, we hope to contribute to the broad social -and perhaps turbulent- discourse within the arts.Anything and everything can be addressed.”
