Publication issued on the occasion of the exhibition 'Buhlebezwe Siwani : Ntu' at Fundatie Zwolle (Feb. 21 - Sep. 20, 2026) Although religious beliefs vary across cultures, they often use the same symbols, rituals, and materials. Buhlebezwe Siwani demonstrates that spirituality is universal and present in all cultures. By examining our shared heritage, she explored in the exhibition *Ntu'how spiritual knowledge has spread and intermingled across the world over the centuries. Siwani (Johannesburg, South Africa, 1987) works with performance, photography, sculpture, and installations. She explores how the Black female body is framed in a male-dominated society. The Black female experience within the context of South Africa is also central to her work. Siwani is an ordained sangoma, a spiritual healer who works in the space between life and death.
