Publication devoted to the scrapbook of the Amsterdam counterculture protagonist Robert Jasper Grootveld (1932–2009), a prophetic artist who was mainly concerned with politically and socially charged issues related to consumerism, race and gender. Grootveld is known for his role in the events surrounding the statue Het Lieverdje on the Amsterdam Spui. But he is also the missing link in the sea of canonical figures from that time, including Provo anarchists Roel van Duijn and Luud Schimmelpennink, cabaret artist Wim Sonneveld, painter Constant Nieuwenhuys and writer Simon Vinkenoog. Grootveld's scrapbook, a collection of photos and newspaper clippings, is a raw and visual ego document that offers a glimpse into life in Amsterdam's counterculture in the early 1960s. In ‘Waiting for the Witch Doctor’, Janna Schoenberger presents the scrapbook as the key to unexpected dimensions in the idiosyncratic artistic and activist repertoire of the man who made it right about sixty years ago with his prophecies about 'the addicted consumer of tomorrow'.
