The artist Annechien Meier will give a guided tour of the exhibition 'Living Remains' by Raul Ortega Ayala. The tour will be followed by the world premiere of 'Borders in Our Mind', a documentary by Annechien Meier and cameraman/editor Gaston Wallé about urban farming in Cuba, one of the very few countries in the world with a state sponsored urban farming program (since the 1990s). According to the Cuban government the availability of healthy food is one of the basic human rights.
The central theme of Annechien Meier's work is the communication between people in urban or rural environments. Through her installations and projects she aims to entice the viewer's curiosity and to encourage interaction. Her work often revolves around (allotment) gardens, which she interprets as reflections of the values and views of specific cultures.
The documentary 'Borders in Our Mind', which Annechien Meier made in collaboration with Gaston Wallé, depicts her experiences in Cuba and shows inspiring examples of sustainable urban farming projects in Havanna. During her stay she learned about new methods of permaculture, about roof gardens, vertical gardens, composting, various sorts of fruits and exotic vegetation. She integrates these methods in her own art projects, like the Panderplein project in The Hague, which focuses on the growing of vegetables and social interaction in this urban community.
Gaston Wallé is an independent filmmaker, who also worked as an video-editor and cameraman/reporter for the local channel Omroep West in The Hague for 11 years. Earlier this year he and Gert-Jan Gerlach joined Annechien Meier as cameramen on a trip to Germany with her ‘Mobile allotment gardens'.
