This summer, Stroom Den Haag is introducing an intensive program focused on fundraising and writing project proposals. Are you a registered The Hague based (inter)national artist who has little experience with writing project proposals, or are you struggling to secure successful funding? This summer intensive: Funding Demystified, is for you!

Running between 9 - 10 July, this two-day workshop at Stroom is based around sharing practical tips and tricks for artists applying for funding in the Netherlands. You will be working closely with peers, guided by Laura Alexander. Laura developed this multi-day workshop within her work at the Prince Claus Fund in Amsterdam, where she worked as a coordinator of Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning until 2025.

Biography Laura Alexander
Laura Alexander (she/her) is a freelance evaluator, researcher and consultant working at the intersection of arts, culture and society. She is focused on qualitative and collaborative ME&L practices, building insight into the needs of practitioners as the front line of social change, and on critical reflection on the position and power of funding bodies in society. She has led workshops for socially engaged artists in Lebanon, Indonesia, Colombia and India, and on behalf of organizations including World Press Photo and the Dutch Art Institute.

About the program
The two days are divided into five blocks, with presentations and exercises alternating throughout. A free lunch will be provided both days by The Hague artist Annechien Meier, with gluten-free and vegan options available. To work most efficiently, participants are asked to bring a laptop or tablet. Participation is free, but you must commit to attending both days. We will start at 10:00 hrs and finish approximately at 17:00 hrs. The workshop will be given in English.

Day 1, Thursday 9 July from 10:00 – 17:00 hrs
This first day is focused on mapping a framework to introduce participants to the key funders they should be aware of. Before the lunchbreak we’ll be diving into the more bureaucratic side of the workshop, so that participants can create a ‘cheat sheet’ to navigating formal application forms. The afternoon is focused on reading application forms and writing a short text concisely describing the participants proposed project. During the day participants will present their work to each other and receive constructive feedback. To conclude the first day we’ll decompress and chat with peers over drinks.

Time schedule
10:00 hrs: walk-in
10:15 hrs: start first two blocks of the workshop
13:30 hrs: lunch break
14:15 hrs: start third block of the workshop
16:00 hrs: drinks
17:00 hrs: end of day one

Day 2, Friday 10 July from 10:00 hrs – 17:00 hrs
The second and last day of the workshop will be focused on budgeting. What is it exactly that you are asking for? Budgets that are clearly put together are part of the story an application tells, and worth approaching from that perspective. After lunch we’ll be diving into reporting. A thorough, reflective report at the close of a project leaves a funder with a positive impression and might make them more likely to fund you again in the future, or to recommend you to others. Not only that, a good processes of reporting can be useful for participants' own processes too!

At the end of the two-day workshop, you will receive a homework assignment that combines all the knowledge you gained and that you can complete on your own. To wrap up our two days of learning together, we will have an informal get-together with drinks in the garden.

Time schedule
10:00 hrs: walk-in
10:15 hrs: start block 4 of the workshop
12:15 hrs: lunch break
13:00 hrs: start block 5 of the workshop
15:00 hrs: drinks
17:00 hrs: end of the day-two workshop

We are looking forward to welcome you!
