'The rest of it is stillness'

'The rest of it is stillness' shows three installations. Each installation is a building block, representing a process in navigating through difficult situations in life.

Location: Stroom, Hogewal 1-9, The Hague
When: 25 June - 31 July 2022
Open: Wednesday - Sunday: 12:00 - 17:00 hrs

In the presentation at Stroom, Ellen Yiu Kwan Kit shows three installations. Each installation is a building block, representing a process in navigating through difficult situations in life, which together are like a meditation on the tenacity of the human spirit and healing. It explores the fragility, complexity and strangeness of life through personal experiences and the application of the I Ching, the 3000 year old mystical text from China that acts as an oracle for the future through a series of symbols.

Ellen Yiu Kwan Kit creates work inspired by craft traditions and natural materials. Her artistic practice is primarily guided by intuition and sensitivity to different processes and materials, often with a touch of humour. She works with different media, upcycled textiles, wood, miniatures, drawings and realizes (site specific) installations. Her work is guided by repetition and reproduction, collecting and archiving; processes that embody her understanding of urgent everyday life and purpose.

The title of the presentation at Stroom - The rest of it is stillness - is a play on the words 'rest' and 'stillness'. Hidden in 'stillness' is the word 'illness'. Her work relates to current themes such as our search for safety and solidarity, the pandemic and the consequences of climate change and the threat of wars.

In 2021, Ellen Yiu Kwan Kit (Hong Kong, 1997) received the Stroom Aanmoedigingsprijs, an encouragement award for talented graduates from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.

Positions
Stroom Den Haag started a new program line this year under the title Positions. Positions features artists based in The Hague and showcases both new work and work in progress, offering an insight into the great diversity of their practice. During the year, next to exhibitions, Stroom provides a platform for additional events like experimental presentations, lectures and performances.
The program Positions is realized by the support of The City of The Hague.
