A presentation by Katerina Konarovská in the former Ondertussen space, that will change and grow over time. With contributions by the artists Katerina Sidorova, Sarah Atzori, Martin Gabriel and Gijsje Heemskerk.
Escape Room refers to the game in which people have to solve a riddle or assignment alone or cooperatively within a certain time limit in order to escape from an enclosed space. The Hague-based artist Katerina Konarovská will offer an alternative version, in the shape of an artistic ‘living space'. It is intended as a space with a private character, reminiscent of our personal living environment - the space to which each of us was forced to withdraw in recent times, the space that defined our freedom of movement, forced us to stay still but also offered protection. Katerina wants to create a place that not only reflects the current situation, but also 'celebrates' it; taking the physical limitations as a starting point for an investigation into whether our adaptations to the situation can also bring creativity and new insights.
And just like Stroom carefully opens its doors to the public again, Konarovska's project explores the current possibilities of artistic collaboration.
The space is not a static one, but will change and grow over time; works will be added and removed. During the coming weeks Katerina will invite four other artists from The Hague to work (together) in the space and to show work; they are Katerina Sidorova, Sarah Atzori, Martin Gabriel and Gijsje Heemskerk. Their point of departure will be their (necessarily isolated and introverted) working method of the past few months, but they will also enter into dialogue with each other (again).
For the occasion Katerina has made a table where visitors can sit, read, listen, watch the works or have a cup of coffee.
This project is part of a new series initiated by Stroom which aims to broaden the parameters of the previous Ondertussen presentations. We have done away with a number of conditions and frameworks that were so self-evident and offered a clear structure. A presentation does not necessarily have to be linked to one specific space, one project, one applicant, one defined period of time. We abandon the idea that a presentation has to report, look back or justify something. Instead, we opt for a period of trial, collaboration, dialogue and experiment.
