Friction and Connection: #3 Wolkenvijver - Carel Visser
Conversations about Art in Public SpaceDate: Tuesday, 9 December 2025
Location: Kunstmuseum, The Hague
Stroom Den Haag, in collaboration with the Reinwardt Academy, is organizing a series of sessions titled Friction and Connection. Conversations about Art in Public Space in which we apply the “emotion networking” method to various artworks in The Hague’s public space. Using this method, we explore the interplay of interests and emotions surrounding five specific artworks and engage in dialogue with various stakeholders. We examine how emotion networking can help map urban changes and what specific role artworks play in this process.
This meeting will focus on Carel Visser’s Wolkenvijver (Cloud Pond)(1985). The artwork - created at the time through the government’s percentage scheme - is located precisely at the corner of the Museon and Johan de Wittlaan. Visser’s work - also known as the Environmental Artwork with Six Sculptures - stands at a location where the Atlantic Wall ran during World War II. The conversation, featuring representatives from the Kunstmuseum, the neighbourhood, the Hague Bunker Association, and a soil expert, will focus on themes such as ownership and maintenance.
Below is a video-impression of the session. You can view other impressions of Friction and Connection on our YouTube channel.
