Part of See You in The Hague
Artist Christian Nyampeta arrived in the Netherlands from Rwanda in 1999 at the age of 16. Trained as an industrial designer, Nyampeta has since developed into an artist whose work explores the lemmas in Roland Barthes' 1977 lecture “Comment vivre ensemble” (How to live together).
At Stroom, Christian Nyampeta will explore urgent themes of reconciliation and forgiveness in the face of genocide, social and cultural conflict, language and translation, sociability and loneliness. Through his personal history, drive and artistic translation, the themes will not remain stuck in theory but become physical and tangible. The focus will not only be on reconciliation in Rwanda, but also on living together with other cultures in our own country.
In How To Live Together, Radius Nyampeta asks the question of whether it is possible to devise common forms of living together that leave room for personal desire and solitary action. To this end, he uses radio broadcasts at Stroom, among others, to explore themes of peace, forgiveness and living together in dialogue with students, artists, architects, philosophers and residents of The Hague.
During workshops, Nyampeta will create musical instruments with participants, which can then be used by visitors; another form of correspondence that allows for both solo and collaborative performances. As such, Nyampeta sees music-making as a prototype for living together, with instruments that can facilitate engagement beyond language.
How To Live Together, Radius is produced in collaboration with ProDemos, Royal Academy of Art The Hague, ISS, the Pashtuns and many others.
