Special on Thom Puckey and the Thorbecke monument (in English with Dutch subtitles) on Diplomat TVIn the presence of Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Mayor Jozias van Aartsen, the Hague monument to 19th century statesman J.R. Thorbecke was unveiled on Feb. 11, 2017.Thom Puckey designed an intriguing ensemble with an almost cinematic structure.In it, the 19th and 21st centuries touch. The effect of Thorbecke's ideas in our time is tangible in his gaze towards “the little gate”. A striking material combination of marble and stainless steel was used for the statue.

The unveiling follows an initiative proposal by The Hague City Council in 2008 to erect a dignified and timeless monument to Johan Rudolph Thorbecke, the founder of our constitutional monarchy, in addition to the monuments to Johan de Witt, Johan van Oldenbarnevelt and Willem Drees.

Stroom The Hague acted as advisor and facilitator.

Johan Rudolph Thorbecke (1798-1872) lived in The Hague for a significant part of his life and also carried out his work in this city. In 1848 Thorbecke designed the Dutch constitution.To this day, this constitution forms the foundation of our constitutional state.A monument to this statesman is therefore appropriate in the government city of The Hague.Other statues of Thorbecke can be found in his hometown of Zwolle and in Amsterdam.
