Rachel Bacon, 2005

Location: Da Costa school, Hollanderstraat 21, The Hague

For the new building of the Da Costa school by architect Bert de Jel, the Hague artist Rachel Bacon designed a special entrance for the schoolyard: a wrought-iron fence constructed from a play of lines that refers to political borders in the world. The fence is the entrance and exit of the playground, with the dual function of opening-admitting and closing-protecting. Pieces of the political border between 2 countries were strung together as long lines and recreated in wrought iron measuring 2 by 2 meters. 'World Map 2004' was festively unveiled on February 23, 2005. A publication will accompany the artwork.
