Martin Riebeek, 2002

Location: De Libel, Doevenetelweg 10-14, The Hague

Martin Riebeek built a small film studio in the hall of the school De Libel. The school children can sit in the studio, a kind of passport photo booth, after which the camera records them. At the same time, or possibly at another time, the footage is played on a large flat screen on the other side of the hall. This produces lots of laughter, screams, excitement and goofy faces. Especially for his film studio, Martin Riebeek has created hundreds of cartoon-like sets and texts that are combined with the children's clips. “Hero of the day,” ‘I'm always unlucky,’ ‘I've never lied before’ are some of the cries. The children do not know in advance what 'environment' they will perform in, and their interaction with the unexpected image produces very surprising and self-contained works of art. The children themselves are very happy with 'their' artwork and cannot get enough of playing new 'roles' all the time.
