Jikke van Loon, 'Maduro-monument', 2016-2017
Location: Square in front of Madurodam
Unveiling: 2017
Madurodam approached Stroom Den Haag for advice and mediation in the realization of the monument for George Maduro and for the development and management of educational projects in The Hague primary schools.
Last year, the first part of the artwork created by Jikke van Loon to honor the 100th birthday of George Maduro was unveiled on the square in front of Madurodam. On Wednesday, February 8, 2017—the death anniversary of the resistance hero (1945, Dachau, Germany)—the unveiling of the ‘Great George’ will follow.
The artwork essentially consists of two sculptures: a portrait of the 10-year-old George Maduro and one of the adult hero, cast in lead. Jikke van Loon: “With this work, I hope to create connections. Connection with history and with the person George Maduro. Connecting people and children with the best in themselves. Connection and anchoring with the ideals of peace and justice.”
In the future, annually on May 4th, during a special commemoration moment, the name of a child will be engraved in lead and inlaid with gold leaf. The hero George Maduro will thus become a shining example for a new generation.
Stroom Den Haag supports and mediates public space commissions and is closely involved in The Hague as an important advisor in the realization of this artwork at Madurodam.
