Ian Hamilton Finlay, 'Et in Arcadia Ego', 1998
Location: Kadewand Hofvijver on the side of the Gevangenpoort, The Hague
Water from the Haagse Beek, which flows from the dunes through The Hague to the city center, cascades into the Hofvijver over a broad water threshold. Above the outlet, there is an equally broad slate plaque with the carved Latin text: Et in Arcadia Ego, which translates to: "I too was in paradise." This phrase is a key concept in the work of Scottish artist Ian Hamilton Finlay and can be interpreted in multiple ways.
The text not only evokes nostalgia for the happiness lost with the expulsion from paradise but also points to the opposite of life that is present everywhere: even in Arcadia, I (Death) am present.
