Evelien van Vugt, 2000

Location: Elementary school Onze Wereld, Brandtstraat 87, The Hague

The elementary school Onze Wereld in Transvaal involved the partition between the schoolyard and the gardens/rear facades of the houses next door. It was a modest commission for which visual artist and designer Evelien van Vugt designed a 32-meter-long aluminum fence of 2 meters high with a photograph of the top floor of the rear facades mounted on it. When you look at the fence from some distance, you see a doubling of reality. Because above the image of the fence protrudes reality: the upper part of the rear facades. Such is the situation now, but later when the entire street is demolished and new houses are built, this fence is a reminder of the multifarious detailing that people construct to their homes over time.
