Daan van Golden - Design of the inner and outer courtyards of the Institute of Social Studies, 1995

Location: Dorus Rijkersplein Den Haag

On the square of the new student housing behind the Institute of Social Studies, one of Europe's most important institutions for higher education and research in developing countries, Van Golden wanted to create a Mediterranean atmosphere in terms of material and furniture. He arranged the space so that three trees could grow on the patio, and thus newly created square, and designed three benches of ocre yellow ceramic tiles that also serve as tree pots. For the pavement of this square, which is actually the roof of the parking garage, he chose bricks in two colors that were laid in an ingenious pattern and had silver colored lampposts installed.
