Carve, 2014

Location: P.C. Hooftschool and DS Karresschool, Escamp, The Hague
Completion: 2014

The difference between the PC Hooftschool and the DS Karresschool could hardly be greater. One school wants to solve everything by doing things together, while the other would rather put a big fence between them. The artwork for the two schools was supposed to be in the joint schoolyard, but it was not ready because of the demolition of the old school building. Behind the schools is a large sports field, the Escamp Carré, where korfball and fitness are played. Because of the temporary delay, the schools had time for design firm Carve to do a thorough study of the use of the sports field. The conclusion was that the sports field had only a few peak times, and could be much better zoned. In consultation with the sports club, the residents, the municipality and the schools, Carve made a design for the entire Escamp Carré. A more efficient layout created extra space for the schools to play. For this spot, Carve designed a number of concrete hopscotch bags integrated with green bins for the square. Together takes more effort and time than a fence, but still provides more satisfaction.
