The work shown at the U.S. Pavilion at the 2010 Venice Biennale is vital and proactive, suggesting solutions, describing the possibilities of new techniques or technologies, or re-framing the problems of the city, and, in the process, defining a new model of architectural practice. From John Portman's architectas-initiator model to cityLAB's research-based, innovative community-driven proposals, these works seek to define their own problems, audiences, and missions. The can-do spirit of each of these projects echo the collaborative, team-based methodologies of 306090 Books, co-presenters of the U.S. Pavilion with Atlanta's High Museum of Art.

Launched by Archis Interventions in cooperation with local and international architecture offices and projects, »MAGIC BLOCKS« presents scenarios for the future development and use of housing estates and thereby stimulate public discussion of housing and other social issues in Bucharest. The cityscape of Bucharest is dominated by huge, standardized public housing estates built during the socialist era, mainly in the 1970 and 1980s - in which circa 70 per cent of the city's population still live. These 'concrete curtains' flank established major traffic axes, blocking the view of the parts of Bucharest that lie behind them.

Part two investigates twentieth-century urban utopianism and contemporary alternative settlements focusing on social and environmental issues, activism and eco-village living. Part three looks to wider horizons in recent practices in the non-affluent world, and Part four reviews a range of cases from the author's visits to specific sites. / by Rotor (Tristan Boniver, Lionel Devlieger, Michael Ghyoot [...et al.]). - Bruxelles : Éditions Communauté françoise Wallonie, 2010. - 120 p. : ills. ; 24 cm. - Française / English
'How things stand' is the catalogue for the project 'usus / usures', at the Belgian pavillion of the 12th Architecture Biennial of Venice, 2010. This publication analyses 'wear' as a material phenomenon and as an agent capable of influencing actions. It is the result of an intensive investigation carried out in Belgium. Wear is approached not as a problem in itself, a testimony to an error of design to be avoided at all costs, but as an inevitable and potentially creative process. Looking at wear then leads to reflection on use, users and construction practices.
