Nick Aikens: "I am interested in cultural practice that takes a critical approach to history and the archive, engaging with both as a means to interrogate the present. Similarly, a current area I am researching are ways in which cultural practitioners explore and articulate the relationship between subjectivity and political agency, again as a means to navigate and understand the present.
More broadly speaking, I am interested in practice that takes a critical and expansive approach in exploring the role of art in society - in particular art practice that challenges its own parameters and steps into other fields, whether that be pedagogy, activism, design, architecture, the law. Here I am interested in practices that challenge traditional notions of artistic authorship, autonomy and object-based practice.
Working in a museum I am also very much interested in thinking through the role of the institution today and am therefore follow different practice that might be understood within the realms of institutional critique as well as those practices that propose different forms of institutionality or means of 'instituting' ".
