Since founding T.O.P. (‘Turn On Planning') office in the 1970s, Belgian architect and artist Luc Deleu (born 1944) has been working on a critical, sociological and ecological approach to urbanism that he has named ‘orbanism': an eco-centric global urbanism that has anticipated such contemporary concerns as environmental pollution, overpopulation, food production and the conflict between the individual and the community.
Orban Space traces Deleu's work and practice through a conceptual topography defined by seven terms: architecture, imitation, depiction, sculpture, scale, mobility and manifesto. The book situates the work and practice within a broader theoretical and historical framework, where they emerge from the lineage defined by such idiosyncratic utopian visionaries as the Metabolists, Richard Buckminster Fuller, Superstudio, Yona Friedman and Constant Nieuwenhuis.

Responding to this neglect, Herscher examines the case of the former Yugoslavia and in particular, Kosovo, where targeting architecture has been a prominent dimension of political violence.

Over the course of three years, from 2006 to 2009, James Welling photographed the Glass House, the architectural landmark estate that Philip Johnson built in New Canaan, Connecticut, in 1949. Welling's photos offer a decided departure from the familiar views of the house and grounds: using digital cameras set on a tripod and holding a variety of filters in front of the lens, he created tinted veils and distortions that transformed the image at the moment of exposure, endowing it with powerful swells of glowing color. As Welling described it in an interview with Artforum, the use of filters enabled his project to become "a laboratory for ideas about transparency, reflectivity and color."

This book offers an interpretation of the Dutch, English and German air raid protection systems, and the construction of a Shelter City, parallel to the existing city, for instance in The Hague. The reconstruction of Shelter City, of which some remnants still present themselves as theatrical memories or enjoy a fragmented existence in deeper layers of the earth, could be characterized with a medical metaphor: the historian must scan the urban body in order to imagine Shelter City.

Een van de meest onderschatte figuren uit de Nederlandse geschiedenis is de kapper/fotograaf/ondernemer Elbertus Donkerwolk. Deze innemende Nijmegenaar blonk uit op vele gebieden. Hij was een moedig zakenman met vooruitziende blik en een van de eerste portretfotografen die Nederland kende. Zijn vroegste geslaagde opnamen stammen uit 1842! Dat hij niettemin in de vergetelheid is geraakt, is misschien te wijten aan het feit dat hij voor alles kapper was.

Though ‘performance' first evolved as a concept in the humanities in the 1940s and 1950s, it has never previously been systematically applied in architecture in an inclusive manner. Here Michael Hensel offers Performance-Orientated Architecture as an integrative approach to architectural design, the built environment and questions of sustainability. He highlights how core concepts and specific traits, such as climate, material performance and settlement patterns, can put architecture in the service of the natural environment. This involves key concepts such as non-discrete and non-anthropocentric architectures.
