Artist statement: Ingrid Lee (Invest)

My work has taken the forms of installations, compositions, performances and objects that explore collective listening, failure and hybridity. Much of it works through conceptual and political ideas in phenomenological explorations or through investigations in technologies through which human relationships are mediated. My current work involves researching the poetics and politics of erasure. This research draws from various disciplines, beginning with archaeologies of memory storage technology, remythologized histories, and digital forgetting. From the written word to data analytics, memory storage technologies have set a precedent for archival practices that neither forgive nor forget. Such practices reinforce hierarchical systems of knowledge production that simultaneously standardize dominant forms of knowledge, and erase knowledge deemed inferior or irrelevant. I am invested in alternative modes of archiving (‘an-archives') as a method of dismantling dominant hierarchies of knowledge. I am also interested in generative erasure as a method of contesting permanence as a measurement of success. Loss, erasure and forgetting for me are generative methodologies; methods to reinvent histories; to mutate ideas and identities to the point that they are untraceable to their origins; to constantly refresh our relationships to the myths and semiotics that code our bodies.
