Tony van de Vorst, 'Vriendinnen' (Girlfriends), 2014

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

Unveiling: Tuesday 2 September 2014 at 16.30 hrs
in concurrence with the opening of the exhibition Sculptures of the City Centre in Atrium City Hall

On the street it is nothing special, but is not often that we see Muslim women in a sculpture. The sculptures of Tony van de Vorst (1946) focus on the beauty and the power of women from many cultures. Almost forty years ago she made a sculpture of two girlfriends from the world of the famous 19th-century painter Breitner. This older work was a source of inspiration for this new sculpture. Van de Vorst depicts women in the contemporary city. Beautiful, stubborn and strong.
