Hans van Bentem, Space Duck Racer, 2011

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

Even though you can see the sparks fly from under his cart, this racing space duck doesn't go into a skid: the wheels stay safely within the confines of the pedestal. He could easily be a character from a weird science fiction comic. No wonder, because Hans van Bentem (1965) is fascinated by popular culture, like comic strips and street art. But he chose ceramics to produce this contemporary figure, an age-old material that has been used by mankind for many centuries. Obviously, the past is Van Bentem's second muse.
