Edwin Janssen, 1993

Various schools, Den Haag

An illustrative school board, on paper mounted on linen, with a reproduction of the painting ‘Ape School' by David Teniers de Jongere, with the text: ‘Monkey business, monkey tricks, aping' (1993) .

Janssen has previously made correlations in his work between human activities in the 20th century and the ape. ‘Homo sapiens are both admirable and disgusting. They are capable of beautiful creations in the areas of art and science, and at the same time can destroy millions of their own species and irrevocably pollute their own environment.'
