FAT 'All You Can Eat'
‘More rather than less' is the motto of the UK based architectural
practice FAT (Fashion Architecture Taste), formed in 1995. Their work
covers fine art, public art and all sorts of things in between. Their
exhibition ‘All You Can Eat' at Stroom Den Haag features models of
current and recent projects as well as more sculptural pieces exploring
central issues concerning the practice.
FAT were recently presented with the prestigious FX Award 'Best Public Project' for their contribution to the Fiets&Stal
project. Thirteen artists, designers and architects were invited to
design guard houses for bicycle stations in The Hague. Fiets&Stal
was initiated in 2000 by Stroom Den Haag, the City of The Hague and the
foundation Biesieklette. The visually striking building, or ‘Non-ument'
as FAT call it, was recently included in a new series of stamps
dedicated to contemporary art, issued by Royal Dutch Mail.
The exhibition ‘All You Can Eat' is a double album retrospective of
greatest hits, new material and rare b sides. FAT are interested in
expanding the boundaries of architecural practice through an engagement
with issues of taste, meaning and the relationships between buildings,
users and the city. This has led the practice to explore languages and
methodologies which lie outside those of mainstream architectural
practice. In addition to playful works such as ‘Chaise' (an antique
baroque chaise-longue, partially covered by a miniature landscape), the
exhibition features the original model of their prize winning
Fiets&Stal guard house; a large model of their contribution to
WiMBY!, a community park and hall in Hoogvliet, NL; photographs of
their major redesign of the SintLucas academy in Boxtel, NL (now
nearing completion) and their design of 23 new houses in Manchester, UK.
