Krijn Giezen

The Haagse Beek Revised

In collaboration with Ian Hamilton Finlay, herman de vries and Remko Scha.

Following his analysis of the condition of the Haagse Beek, polluted and in some cases flowing against its natural course, Giezen proposed purifying the stream by rearranging existing elements. He asked Ian Hamilton Finlay (word), herman de vries (vegetation) and Remko Scha (sound) to react to this. Giezen presented his plans and those of his colleagues in an unfolded concertina-type folder with text and drawings on a long narrow work table. He, himself, wants to expose the source of the stream, de vries proposed making a small cultivated park on the route inaccessible in order to allow the original vegetation to return, Finlay presented a natural stone model of the inflow of the stream in the Hofvijver and Remko Scha presented a sound piece in a closed cabin, inspired by the pumping station that breaks the course of the stream.
There was also an audio/visual presentation the size of a wall, compiled by landscape architect Michiel den Ruyter and the photographer Ben ter Mull. Panoramic photographs showed the course of the stream together with commentary about the meaning of natural water in an urban environment.
