Aanmoedigingsprijs 2019
Christina Kordunian and Hyo Young (Moe) Kim
Each year the Stroom Aanmoedigingsprijs (Encouragement Award) of € 2.500,- is given to selected student(s) as a special incentive upon their graduation from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague (KABK)
This year the special jury (see below) has given the Stroom Encouragement Award to Christina Kordunian (department Graphic Design) and Hyo Young (Moe) Kim (department Textile & Fashion).
Christina Kordunian (department Graphic Design) impressed with a project that researches the relationship between artificial intelligence and human memory. The project investigates the possibilities to expand our memory and open it up to new, as yet unknown experiences and visual worlds. Kordunian works with exciting propositions and great contrasts. Her research produces fascinating images - cinematographic, futuristic, alienating and recognizable at the same time. Based on the richness of its concept, its questioning and its imaginary capacity, the jury foresees great potential for further research.
The textile work of Hyo Young (Moe) Kim (Textile & Fashion department) also stood out. The work surprised by the combination of poetic beauty, craftsmanship, traditionality and tactility, and the LED light that was subtly and unexpectedly woven into the work. By using this contemporary technological material in a traditional art form, the two worlds are connected. But the work is also able to raise larger questions in a non-obtrusive way, such as about the value of craftsmanship, technological development and its invasive character on our lives.
