Ouborgprijs 2007

Zeger Reyers

Ouborg Award 2007 has been presented to Zeger Reyers, one of Holland's most remarkable contemporary artists. The Ouborg Award, named after the artist Pieter Ouborg (1893-1956) from The Hague, is a municipal award for visual arts given every two years to an artist from The Hague, and consists of a publication made by Stroom Den Haag, a sum of money (€ 4,750) and an exhibition in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.

Publication Zeger Reyers: 'Still Growing / Stil Groeien'
For the publication entitled 'STILL GROWING / STIL GROEIEN' Zeger Reyers and graphic designer Renate Boere chose the format of a contemporary glossy magazine. It is a remarkable magazine in every sense of the word, emphasizing the feelings of wonder and admiration Zeger Reyers' work generates. In texts and a rich display of pictures the publication offers a candid overview of Zeger Reyers' inspiration and aspirations, passion and mentality, illustrating a body of work characterized by a fascination for natural processes of growth, bloom and decay. The magazine is available at Stroom Den Haag, the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag and selected bookstores.

Zeger Reyers
(1966) studied at the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam from 1990 to 1995 and became known for his installations of spaces overgrown with mushrooms and fungi. In 2004, for his installation 'Aqua Boogie' he flooded one of the lower rooms of the GEM, museum of contemporary art. Upon entering the room the visitors  experienced a space with its very own smell, sound and humidity. The installation 'Aqua Boogie II' which Reyers made especially for the Ouborg Award 2007 is also inspired by human and natural processes. 'Aqua Boogie II' is made possible by the financial support of Fonds BKVB (The Netherlands Foundation for Visual Arts, Design and Architecture) and Stroom Den Haag.
