OpZicht is a presentation space in the lobby of Stroom Den Haag for newly registered artists from The Hague. The wall unit functions as a stand or platform where the artist can share his or her work, passion or interest with the audience. Each presentation runs for approximately 7 weeks.

In 1980 my father hitchhiked approximately 8000 kilometres through Scandinavia. He was 17 years old at the time. While he didn't take any photographs, his trip is documented through a booklet of city names, which he displayed while hitching rides. My father's choice to travel this way was an obvious and common one at the time.

Hitchhiking takes mutual trust and this was put to the test when my brother and I attempted to retrace the same route in the summer of 2016. Curious to see how far we would get and who we would meet. Hoping to get 'under the hood' of contemporary hitchhiking culture.

In OpZicht I show my first reflections on our trip and our encounters.

Artist Statement Cleo Wächter
I photograph to investigate the world around me; its history as well as its cultural values. I am interested in Social Geography and landscapes that carry scientific meaning. In my opinion, reason and emotion should work with and not against each other.

I act like a romantic scientist, a poet who rhymes with facts. I am curious, full of hope and ever searching. With my photographs I aim to show my astonishment and found knowledge.
