Ondertussen: Mark van Overeem

16 March - 5 May 2013
Location: Hogewal 1-9, The Hague
Open: Monday-Friday: 11 am - 5 pm; Saturday and Sunday: 12 noon - 5 pm

Some time ago Mark van Overeem started his artistic research into the possibilities of connecting the art of painting to the real world that surrounds us. This research project was the result of his desire to set the painted narrative free from the restrictions of the flat surface. The link between the physical world and the world of the imagination should result in a new experience or perception of space. In 2011 Van Overeem had two research goals in mind: the use of photos and films (whether or not staged) of everyday situations and the creation of illusory spaces in architectural environments.

His research gained momentum with a series of presentations and exhibitions, in which Mark van Overeem experimented with concepts like frame, perspective, suggestion, illusion, reflection, repetition, offset and time. He discovered that he was able to tell a story that didn't have to be a narrative, but that could be reduced to an image of associations, feelings and thoughts.

In the Ondertussen space Mark van Overeem has created a trompe l'oeil like environment that refers to recent works he realized in concurrence with his research project.

In 2011 Mark van Overeem received a PRO Research Subsidy for his project.

Ondertussen
The former reception area of Stroom has been converted into a small exhibition space. On a regular basis there are presentations of artists who have received a subsidy in the categories Stroom PRO- and SPOT-grants. The informal exhibitions and presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the Stroom grant system. The program in the space is called Ondertussen (the Dutch word for 'meanwhile').
