In the Ondertussen space photographer Johan Nieuwenhuize presents his project IMG_, a growing archive of more than 250 abstract and semi-abstract observations of "the city". Nieuwenhuize made the photographs during his travels in Western Europa and North America. The way the images are combined, is based on the 'Kuleshov effect', demonstrated by Russian filmmaker Lev Kuleshov in the 1920s. It is a mental phenomenon by which viewers derive more meaning from the interaction of two sequential shots than from a single shot in isolation. In his presentations of IMG_, Nieuwenhuize applies this psychological phenomenon in order to shift the meaning of individual images, alter the context and let the viewer associate freely, to form new meanings.

Johan Nieuwenhuize presented IMG_ at a variety of locations and in various forms, like in Galerie Van Kranendonk in The Hague, Streetlevel Photoworks in Glasgow and in Fotomuseum Den Haag. In November 2014 the project is part of the Hungarian Month of Photography in Budapest.

The project also resulted in the publication IMG_ (Kehrer Verlag, 2014) with a selection of photographs, plus indepth texts by Malcolm Dickson (director Street Level Photoworks) and Robin van Emden (cognitive psychologist and behavioral economist). The publication was designed by Sybren Kuiper. The book is for sale in the Stroom bookshop.

An important aspect of Nieuwenhuize's artistic practice is the exploration of new forms of financing. IMG_ is his second publication that was realized mainly through crowdfunding. Nieuwenhuize offers the audience the opportunity to become a shareholder in the project. The 'shares' consist of a special edition of the book, in combination with specific works from the project.

In 2013 Johan Nieuwenhuize received a PRO Kunstprojectensubsidie and a SPOT Tentoonstellingssubsidie for his project IMG_.

Ondertussen
The former reception area of Stroom has been converted into a small exhibition space. On a regular basis there are presentations of artists who have received a subsidy in the categories Stroom PRO- and SPOT-grants. The informal exhibitions and presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the Stroom grant system. The program in the space is called Ondertussen (the Dutch word for 'meanwhile').
