Open: Monday-Friday: 11 am-5 pm; Saturday-Sunday: 12 noon-5 pm

In his work Mark de Weijer focuses on colour, skin/texture and space. In 2009 he started a special research project into the use of water colours on paper. This technique makes it possible to create highly detailed nuances in the colour scheme of a work. As a background for his watercolours De Weijer uses purely scooped, handmade paper from a water-operated mill in the Dutch Veluwe area, one of the last surviving businesses still processing paper pulp according to traditional methods. The paper produced here has an unusual structure and a jagged edge.

Many layers and shades of strongly diluted watercolour paints are applied to the paper. This transparency allows the colour to be built up layer by layer, leaving the paper's texture untouched. The layers of colour produce an irregular effect, partly because the interaction between background and pigment determines the intensity of the colours.

Mark de Weijer's work, both in concept and aesthetically, responds to the surroundings for which it is created. Before coming up with a design he analyses the location in detail. Form, rhythm, surface, structure and colour are all inseparably linked to this specific location. It is impossible to relocate the work and it is only in this specific location that it is shown to its full advantage.

In 2009 Mark de Weijer received a Stroom PRO Research subsidy for his water colours on paper research project.

Ondertussen
The former reception area of Stroom has been converted into a small exhibition space. On a regular basis there are presentations of artists who have received a subsidy in the categories Stroom PRO- and SPOT-grants. The informal exhibitions and presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the Stroom grant system. The program in the space is called Ondertussen (Meanwhile).
