Ondertussen: Karel van Laere

31 October - 13 December 2015
Location: Hogewal 1-9, The Hague
Open: Monday to Friday: 11-17 hrs; Saturday and Sunday: 12-17 hrs

In December 2014 the Hague artist Karel van Laere presented his video work ‘SLow' at the Bucharest International Experimental Film Festival (BIEFF) in Romania. The screening at this festival for emerging talent in experimental film was accompanied by an invitation to give a presentation about his work as a video artist/performer.

‘SLow' is the second part of video triptych dedicated to a defenseless body being dragged around. Slowly but imperturbably the man in the video follows his own path. Using an invisible electric tackle he drags himself in an even tempo through the Taiwanese urban landscape, marking in an entertaining and wondrous way the contrast between the route of the defenseless human body and the hectic world surrounding it.

At the moment Van Laere is finishing the last part of the triptych, entitled ‘Largo'. This film should be finished in the beginning of 2016. With ‘Largo' he wants to bring his work one step further, for example by incorporating interviews with people who have to live with paralysis. On 26 November 2015 he will show a preview of ‘Largo' in Zaal 3 of Theater aan het Spui.

In Ondertussen Karel van Laere presents his film ‘SLow' and the costume he wore during the making of the film. He received a SPOT grant for his presentation at BIEFF.

Ondertussen
The former reception area of Stroom has been converted into a small exhibition space. On a regular basis there are presentations of artists who have received a subsidy in the categories Stroom PRO- and SPOT-grants. The informal exhibitions and presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the Stroom grant system. The program in the space is called Ondertussen (the Dutch word for 'meanwhile').
