Anno Dijkstra, ‘A Last Farewell’, 2011

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

A member of an indigenous Amazon tribe in traditional attire embraces a Western tourist. This sculpture by Anno Dijkstra (1970) looks like a typical holiday snapshot. But it is one with a distinctive edge. Why does the man miss an arm and why does the other person hardly have a face? It is a reference to the fact that ancient Indian cultures can only survive thanks to tourists who like to consume authentic ways of life. In the busy shopping street the work poses the question: who is dependent upon whom?
