Distribution of Ethics: Archive as Lexicon
We are witnessing a conflict blossoming at the heart of culture, a conflict convened around the property rights that subsist in materials stored in public archives. After all, creativity is never solely the product of a single author as it always owes debts to the inspiration and previous work of others. All ideas depend upon their social life, which ensures their longevity, relevance or extinction. Artists bear particular responsibility for dissemination of practices marked by openness often found in grass-roots movements, civic cultures, and friendships. Now is our opportunity for fostering new forms of sharing, affiliation, and the public good by questioning knowledge enclosures and tirelessly working together upon a foundation for an engaged critical assembly.

In collaboration with the workshop programme from the Master Artistic Research, the KABK has invited invite London- based artist Marysia Lewandowska to give a lecture. She has explored the public function of archives, museums and exhibitions through a distributive practice often resulting in publications and films. She has initiated projects involving the property of others activating reflections on the ownership of knowledge, on the commons, and values associated with sustainable public realm. Her forthcoming film connects property speculation with cultural transformation of museums in China.

Immediately following the lecture, students of the MA Artistic Research will share the results of their 2 day workshop with Marysia, on The Archive as Lexicon. This will be followed by drinks and snacks.

Marysia Lewandowska is a Polish-born artist based in London since 1985. She recently completed a two year artist-in residency at Asia Art Archive in Hong KongK (2014-2016). Her work has been presented by Tate Modern, Moderna Museet, Muzeum Sztuki, and Whitechapel Gallery. She is co-editor with Laurel Ptak of Undoing Property? ( Sternberg Press, 2013). www.marysialewandowska.com
