Vanaf de jaren zeventig was R.D.E. (Ootje) Oxenaar werkzaam bij de Dienst Esthetische Vormgeving van de PTT - van 1970 tot 1976 als adjunct en daarna tot 1994 als hoofd. Zijn betekenis als een van de belangrijkste publieke opdrachtgevers in deze periode van het grafisch ontwerpen in Nederland is nauwelijks te overschatten. Dat succes is te danken aan Oxenaars eigen visuele productie vanaf het begin van de jaren vijftig en aan de positie die hij op grond daarvan als vooraanstaand grafisch ontwerper innam in het ontwerpveld. In dit boek worden zijn opdrachtnemer- en opdrachtgeverschap met elkaar in verband gebracht door de vraag te stellen naar de maatschappelijke functie van het grafisch ontwerpen. In our current global networked culture that puts so much emphasis on the virtual and the visual, the mind and the body have become detached and ultimately disconnected. De Zuidas als grootschalig stedenbouwkundig gebied blijft intrigeren. Het residency project Vrije Ruimten Zuidas presenteert kunst als gangmaker voor reflectie en projectie.
