In zijn essay Wetenschap als beroep muntte de aartsvader van de sociologie Max Weber het beroemde begrip ‘de onttovering van de wereld'. We hoeven niet meer, zoals de primitieve mens, naar magische middelen te grijpen om de geesten te bezweren of gunstig te stemmen. Dat doen technische middelen en berekening voor ons. Dat noemen we in strikte zin intellectualisering.' In zijn uitdagende Huizinga-lezing stelt Bas Heijne dat wij hardhandig op de grenzen van dit door Weber benoemde proces van ‘intellectualisering' gestuit zijn. In zijn lezing dringt Bas Heijne door tot de kern van wat hij als het grootste conflict van onze tijd beschouwt, het streven naar een rationeel geordende wereld en onze onuitroeibare hang naar betovering.
De Huizingalezing wordt jaarlijks georganiseerd door de Faculteit der Geesteswetenschappen van de Universiteit Leiden, NRC Handelsblad en de Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde.

Hermeneutiek is van oudsher de kunst van het uitleggen, maar interpreten en vertalers doen meer dan alleen woorden verhelderen. Wanneer hermeneutiek wordt opgevat als spreken namens de ander, blijkt de interpreet tevens de stem te zijn van hen die afwezig zijn of de taal van de toehoorders niet machtig zijn - of dit nu de goden, de doden of de sprakelozen zijn. Vandaag de dag wint dit motief alleen maar aan belang. In gesprek met denkers uit het verleden laat Van der Heiden zien dat het spreken namens de ander een nieuw en ongedacht licht werpt op typisch hermeneutische thema's als dialoog, vertaling en traditie. Tevens toont hij aan dat dit spreken een grondmotief in de hedendaagse wijsbegeerte is.

The book N 50 51 40.9 E 3 24 1.3 is a breath-taking compendium with over 1000 reproductions of the most recent series of drawings by Marcel van Eeden. Van Eeden (The Hague, 1965) has been working on a continually expanding body of work for over twenty years. For his drawings and paintings Van Eeden draws inspiration from found images created before he was born. A large part of his work consists of drawings in which Van Eeden mixes historical fact with fiction. Many of the artist's stories stage recurring characters, allowing viewers to ‘read' Van Eeden's works as part of a whole, and as individual pieces of art. Because Marcel van Eeden thoroughly researches his topics, it is often unclear to the public where reality ends and fiction begins.

In the last 40 years of his life, Horst Ademeit dedicated himself to the documentation of the noxious influence of cold rays on himself and his environment. With the help of Polaroid photography as well as analog and digital photography, he secured the material of his daily observations, also documenting descriptively the smells, sounds, and the atmosphere of his observations on the white frame of the Polaroids. Ademeit developed a complex recording system for the documentation of cold rays, in which repetitive motifs and descriptions form firm relationships. The necessity of recording and the conclusive logic of his system required a compulsory routine that determined the structure of his entire day.

Twee jaar lang bracht Bart Lodewijks krijttekeningen aan in Ronse, voornamelijk in de volkswijk Prinskouter aan de Spinsterstraat. Als sluitstuk schreef hij al zijn opgedane ervaringen neer in een boek Het Schiereiland van Vlaanderen . Op uitnodiging van Cultuurcentrum De Ververij van de stad Ronse werkte de Nederlandse kunstenaar Bart Lodewijks tussen 2010 en 2012 in de volksbuurt Prinskouter. Met schoolbordkrijt maakte hij grote abstracte tekeningen die zich een weg banen door de Spinstersstraat.

Behalve ontwikkelingen in waterhuishouding, architectuur en stedenbouw komt in dit boek een groot aantal andere aspecten aan de orde: ook de medische, sociale, demografische en economische ontwikkelingen maken deel uit van dit prachtige verhaal. De geschiedenis van ons landschap is onlosmakelijk verbonden met die van de mensen die het vormgaven.

Met deze gebeurtenis begon de stichtingsfase van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden.

In the year 1966, a young man named Stewart Brand handed out buttons in San Francisco reading: "Why haven't we seen a photograph of the whole Earth yet?" Two years later, the NASA photograph of the "blue planet" appeared on the cover of the Whole Earth Catalog. The photo of the blue planet developed a sphere of influence like almost no other image: it stands not only for ecological awareness and crisis but also for a new sense of unity and globalization. The exhibition "The Whole Earth" is an essay composed of cultural-historical materials and artistic positions that critically address the rise of the image of "One Earth" and the ecological paradigm associated with it.
