Thom Puckey, 'Eline Vere', 2012

Center of The Hague: Spui - Grote Markstraat - Kalvermarkt

Part of The Sculpture Gallery

P. Struycken, the initiator of The Sculpture Gallery invited Thom Puckey (1948) to make a sculpture dedicated to a hero from The Hague. He chose Eline Vere, the tragic main character from the novel of the same name by the famous Hague author Louis Couperus (1863-1923). Puckey depicts the death scene in which the beautiful Eline, in a fit of madness, takes too many sleeping pills. He went to work like a 19th century sculptor: after nature, with an eye for classic postures and opting for a perfect finish.
