Mark Pimlott will give a lecture at Stroom Den Haag about
the photographs in his current exhibition 'All things pass'. The
photographs feature urban terrains that appear to await events or have
been witnesses to events past; and interiors that look to light from
without or back upon their own artifice. He will situate his work
within the context of the work of other photographers who have taken
the act of making photographs as a form of meeting with the other or
the World. Common to all is the significance of time, attention, and
silence; and a kind of clearing, a space between the photographer and
the subject, through which the subject and the subject's relation to
the photographer/viewer might exist.
The selection of photographs in 'All things pass' has been made
specifically for the conditions of the gallery at Stroom. The
photographs are made with great attention, yet with the means of the
amateur. They respect the traditions of both the topographical
photograph (the view) and the snapshot (the cliché), fulfilling the
artist's obligation to describe, and his wish to preserve a sense of
immediacy. A desire to recover the possibility of being in the World is
central to his pictures. His early photographs, made directly from
childhood experiences, registered the extended urban environment
characteristic of North America, affected by its claims on modernity,
technology, history, nature and space itself. Their subject -the
outward appearances of a designed, condensed, interiorised and hopeful
world- became central to Pimlott's practice in architectural design and
the visual arts. The nature and evolution of this subject is
extensively discussed in his book Without and within: essays on
territory and the interior' (episode: Rotterdam, 2007). The photographs
shown in the exhibition and the lecture will appear in a book entitled
'All things pass', to be published later this year, again by episode.
Mark Pimlott (Montréal, 1958) is an artist, designer and writer.
He is currently senior lecturer in Architecture (interior) at TU Delft.
Making photographs has been a pivotal aspect of his practice for twenty
