Ondertussen: Gordan Savičić

19 May thru 22 July 2012
Location: Hogewal 1-9, The Hague
Open: Monday-Friday: 11 am-5 pm; Saturday-Sunday: 12 noon-5 pm

Under the motto 'Virtual is not the non-real, but actually the more-real' Gordan Savičić looks into the interaction between visible/tangible reality and reality created by information and communication technology. He is fascinated by new issues of our contemporary existence caused by the effects of new media on subjectivity and its deep social implications. He is interested in imposing and applying the assumed (computed) reality within different realms to discuss its potential future and exploit. Main research areas around his projects include game cultures, digital and urban interventions, architecture, pervasive computing as well as open source technologies. His working method is playful while at the same time advocating active involvement, inspired by Dada, Fluxus, Punk and conceptual art.

In Ondertussen Gordan Savičić shows three projects supported by a Stroom Invest grant. One of them is entitled Packetbrücke, in collaboration with the Swedish artist Bengt Sjölén. The project focuses on smartphones, tablets and other devices that use geo-location services. He adds a disruptive element, undermining the functioning of the appliances.

In February 2012 he published a book about the Brazilian capital Brasilia, in collaboration with Selena Savić. The book is the result of a research project in which they look at the city as a stage, with Savičić and Savić adopting the role of actors in order to analyze Brasilia's urban friction. In Ondertussen the preview of a new publication about 'unpleasantness' in the urban environment is presented.

The project City CPU shows the explosive growth of the Chinese mega city Shenzhen, represented by the diagram of the motherboard of a computer, illustrating the way our cities are rationalized by information systems.

Gordan Savičić received a PRO Invest grant in 2011.

Ondertussen
The former reception area of Stroom has been converted into a small exhibition space. On a regular basis there are presentations of artists who have received a subsidy in the categories Stroom PRO- and SPOT-grants. The informal exhibitions and presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the Stroom grant system. The program in the space is called Ondertussen (Meanwhile).
