Ondertussen: Melle de Boer

31 juli t/m 26 september 2010
Location: Hogewal 1-9

The former reception area of Stroom has been converted into a small exhibition space. On a regular basis there are presentations of artists who have received a subsidy in the categories Stroom PRO- and SPOT-grants. The informal exhibitions and presentations are intended to illustrate the diversity of the Stroom grant system. The program in the space is called Ondertussen (Meanwhile).

For Melle de Boer making a drawing is like getting into a fight with a wild animal, like a guitar solo by Neil Young. No holds barred. What will come out of it is unpredictable, the result far from clean. This fight has a direct link to his youth and the idealized world of super heroes, a world he soon realized does not exist. The drawings depict a one dimensional modern western world of  'winners and losers'. But Melle de Boer goes beyond the cliche and shows us a less predictable, ‘uglier' world.

In Ondertussen Melle de Boer shows a selection of drawings from his series ‘Commodore 64 drawings', inspired by the computer games from the 1980s the artist used to play as a child. The drawings are also featured in the new publication 'Melleville', which also includes a cd by Melle de Boer's band 'John Dear Mowing Club'.

In March 2010 Melle de Boer showed part of this series at the Pulse Art Fair in New York. For this presentation he received a SPOT-exhibition grant.
